The focus of all quality system and risk management programs is to reduce the potential for product defects. Defective products ultimately results in some type of risk for customers and the organization. Six Sigma is a systematic approach to reducing defects in an organization’s business process. The difference between Six Sigma and other quality programs is that the Six Sigma methodology focuses heavily on eliminating those factors that contribute to high process defect levels. As a metric the goal of a Six Sigma program is to reduce process and product defects to 3.4 defects per million opportunities. As a quality system, Six Sigma can be utilized successfully to significantly decrease defects which enables lower manufacturing costs, lower risks and increased customer satisfaction.
